‘Super’ Super Moon

Happy Supermoon-watching!!

Moon, Earth’s only natural satellite, orbits around the earth in about a month’s time. The moon’s orbit around the earth is kind of elliptical, with one side closer to the earth than the other. The point on the moon’s orbit that is closest to the Earth is called the Perigee and the point farthest away from the Earth is called the Apogee.

This means the Moon hits the Perigee and the Apogee once a month (once at the Perigee and once at the apogee). If it happens to be a full moon or a new moon at the Perigee, then it is called a Perigee Moon astronomically, and referred to as a Super Moon astrologically.

It is Super moon because it is at the closest to the Earth and it visually appears to be 14% larger in size and 30% more brighter than when it is at the apogee, the farthest from the earth.

Though there can be more than one occurrence of super moon in a year, the one happening on November 14th, 2016 is a ‘Super’ super moon, given that it is at the closest to the earth in the past 60 plus years. Given the fact that the moon and the earth both rotate, and the moon is in synchronous rotation with the Earth, though in Perigee, the closest distance will vary. This super moon on November 14th is that closest one, making it the ‘Super’ super moon in the last few decades.

Let’s get to it astrologically. Why is it the extra super moon this time?

The Super moon tonight (November 14th, 2016) is a bright large full moon in Krithika nakshatra, in Rishaba (Taurus). The moon is exalted at 3 degrees Taurus and moolatrikona in Taurus. The moon represents water and Taurus (bull) is earth, a fixed sign. Water flowing on earth obviously makes it fertile. Exalted moon in Taurus brings out the best of qualities.

Krithika represents agni, fire. It also means the water (moon) in fire (Krithika) coming together on the earth (Taurus), fixed sign. The tsunami warnings and earthquake in New Zealand today could be a sign of this. Some could have water dehydration / stomach issues (fire, water) today. Should become better in a day or so.

We know we are made of 70% water. We also know that the Moon has great influence on water. Meditating on this Super full moon day will greatly help!!
